Weird Real Estate in the Portland Area

When I get bored, I like to peruse Redfin and look around the area and see where I might want to move to (or not). This week there have been some gems.

When I think of Portland, I definitely don’t think of houses like this. The description says “Close to downtown Portland yet worlds apart!” Which is half true. This is worlds apart from downtown Portland AND worlds away. It’s actually in a town called Damascus, Oregon, that, if we’re being generous, we’ll say is in the Portland metro. Anyway, the pictures speak for themselves. It’s been on the market for 289 days, so you’ll have to act fast if you want it. But I think the $5.6M price tag and 3 bed 4.5 baths (???) are calling you.

Why go outside when the outside can come to you?

Is this a bedroom? Or is it the entryway?

Um.

Um.

I love houses that stick with their style throughout, from the living room to the…bathroom. Nothing screams comfort like wall-to-wall carpeting in the bathroom. There is also a sauna (sorry it’s not carpeted). Even their leather chairs in the living room match. It will probably come as a shock that this house was custom built and has only ever had one owner. The windows are great, and generally seems well taken care of, and has the longest garage in the Pacific Northwest. $1.2M, also in Damascus.

There are more pillars in this house than can be counted. $4M in the Dunthorpe neighborhood of Lake Oswego, Oregon. This lovely property ditched their grass, not for green, draught-tolerant plants, but for cement. The description says “One of a kind lifetime opportunity to own a magnificent river front retreat.” If $4M is the going rate for retreats these days, I’d like to know what I’ve been doing wrong. But seriously, there are pillars inside and outside of the house. And, while I love Portland, the Willamette River is really not selling the PNW in these photos. The kitchen floor is a showstopper, with ZERO pillars in there, there had to be something to draw our attention.

At first I thought this was your run-of-the-mill 100-year-old house. This house is in Portland’s West Hills and built in 1918. It looks to be in excellent condition. Then I scrolled through the attic and the basement. Someone clearly needed to make this place their own. A cool $6M and this house and that red room could be yours.
